ONE of West Cork's most popular pubs, Mick Finn's famous GAA bar in Clonakilty, is for sale.
The recently refurbished bar, which can accommodate 150 patrons, is expected to fetch 1m to 1.5m, according to joint selling agent Sherry FitzGerald O'Neill.
Finn, a larger than life footballing legend and local Fianna Fail politician, bought the place in the 1940s. His family sold the pub to a syndicate of local businessmen five years ago.
The premises, located at a busy town centre junction with frontage on two streets, has a modern ground-floor bar and lounge and a kitchen area, and an upstairs bar. There is planning permission for an upstairs apartment.
Mick Finn won All-Ireland medals with the Cork senior football team in the 1940s and his sporting exploits continue to be celebrated in the black and white photographs which still adorn the pub walls.
Apocryphal tales of his doughty endeavours on the field of play are still told in the pub, estate agent Raymond O'Neill says. One particular favourite with locals recounts his reassuring riposte to a young Clonakilty player, partnering him at midfield for the first time. The nervous youngster asked Mick which of the two extremely robust opposition players he would be expected to mark. Don't worry, son, " said Mick, you play the ball . . . I'll mark both of them."
He's dead a good few years now and the family sold the business five years ago, but while the new owners refurbished and modernised the premises entirely they've honoured his memory by retaining photographs and other footballing memorabilia, " O'Neill says. It's a thriving business with a reputation for good food.
And Clonakilty today is a bustling town with a yearround tourism industry, so we're expecting plenty of interest."
