IRISH MEP Eoin Ryan has backed calls for a full review of the controversial Dublin Convention relating to asylum seekers, claiming the legislation helps create deplorable" conditions for asylum seekers in southern Europe. The European Parliament recently passed a resolution calling for a review of the convention . . . now called Dublin II . . . condemning it as unfair and unworkable in its present form. MEPs claimed Dublin II was creating massive problems by shifting asylum claims disproportionately towards southern and eastern European states.
Under the terms of Dublin II, immigrants may apply for asylum only in the first EU country in which they land.
The convention was drafted in Ireland in 1990. MEPs travelled to Malta earlier this month to examine conditions at refugee camps in that country, which were deemed to fall far below internationally recognised standards". Due to its position as a first port of entry for northern African asylum seekers, MEPs found that Dublin II was placing an ?intolerable burden" on Malta and other southern European states.
