Nerina Pallot Fires 14th Floor Records (46m 50s)
There's only room for one of each these days when it comes to commercially massive music. One indie band . . . Kaiser Chiefs, one male singer/songwriter . . . James Blunt, one female . . . KT Tunstall. But every year brings a new crop to harvest, and Nerina Pallot will be hoping to muscle in on the year-long success that Tunstall, Runga, Hayes and co have enjoyed. Fortunately, Fires has far more depth than the quarterly reports thrown around boardrooms by record labels. Some tracks have been mangled, sorry 'remixed', since last year's release to enable maximum market penetration (or something), but Pallot's voice and lyrics are feisty, delivering radio-friendly anti-radio punches with conviction and melody. Opener 'Everybody's Gone To War' is worthy of Sheryl Crow, while 'Damascus' treads Kathleen Edwards territory perfectly. 'Sophia' clothes Pallot's voice with tenderness while 'Heart Attack' brings us back to the rock.
