PAM'S PICKS: TONGS

Nicky Clarke: Supermodels Ultra Ceramic Salon Tong, 23.95, Boots This has two different heat levels depending on what you need and the barrel is quite small so you get a very defined curl. I find that the tighter the curl at the beginning, the longer it will last for you. The ceramic barrel stops the hair sticking to it and heats up very quickly too.

Babyliss Curl Press Normally 36.00, now 28.17, Boots Apart from having a twisted metal barrel, it also has an appliance that grips the curl and squeezes it to give a more defined finish.

I know these tongs work really well but I find them very tricky. The hard part is getting your hair into the grip without toasting your fingers. Maybe with a little more practice I would be fine but for now I'll be sticking to a regular tongs.

Mark Hill: Thermoceramic & Tourmaline Tong, 59.95, Boots A really good sized barrel that gives a great soft curl. Very easy to use and a real bonus was the heat mat that came with it . . . no more scorched bedroom carpets.

And better still, you can wrap it up and take it away with you as soon as you've finished using it. This was undoubtedly the best of the three.
