The Deerhunter (1978) Director: Michael Cimino, Starring: Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep Evocative Vietnam movie about the war-torn lives of Pennsylvania steel-workers with the Saigon scenes shot in Bangkok . . . the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel was used as the screen hospital and a local school (St Gabriel's) doubled as the American Embassy. Many of the rural scenes were filmed along the banks of the River Kwai, an area also used for the Vietcong POW camp
