A leafy retreat downWicklow way
Valerie Shanley

THIS detached, stone-built country cottage, a former RIC barracks, is tucked privately away in its own leafy glade at Killalesh, Kiltegan, Co Wicklow.

Woodside is aptly named, as it is surrounded by trees and shrubs as old as the house itself, with welltended gardens sure to delight now summer is just round the corner.

Some original interior features remain, such as the stone fireplaces and vaulted ceilings. Entrance is through the porch with tiled floor, and on through double doors to the livingroom. A large granite fireplace with solid-fuel stove is an inviting feature here, while a second set of double doors leads out to the patio. The family room adjacent is also warmed by a traditional stove; the kitchen/breakfast room has custom-made antique presses, Belfast sink and tiled floor in keeping with its country location. Two bedrooms, one with built-in wardrobes, are on the first floor.

Outside, there is a pebbled driveway, two woodsheds and a Barna shed. The manicured gardens extend to almost a half acre, while beyond the view takes in the southern ranges of the Wicklow mountains. Baltinglass is two miles away; Blessington 20 miles; and Dublin 38 miles.
