FLAT racing takes centre stage at this afternoon's two meetings at Navan and Gowran Park, and the Dermot Weld-trained Cairdeas, carrying the Presidential colours of Mary McAleese, is fancied to capture the listed Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan at the expense of Michael Kinane's mount Kastoria.
With Weld's stable jockey Pat Smullen on duty at Gowran Park, where he has a good chance of completing a double for his boss aboard Tajneed and Michikabu, Cairdeas will be partnered by the inform Declan McDonogh.
The five-year-old can step up on his effort when fourth behind Arch Rebel on his seasonal reappearance at the Curragh earlier this month.
The stable is in cracking form at present, which augurs well for his chances, and Cairdeas, who won on his second start last season, is preferred to John Oxx's Kastoria.
The latter is making her seasonal bow here, but was successful in a listed race at York last August, en route to filling the runner-up spot in two Group 2 events at Doncaster and Longchamp.
Declan McDonogh has an interesting book of rides at the meeting, and may get his name on the scoresheet early through the veteran Miracle Ridge, who is fancied to follow up on his recent Cork win, while Spirit Of Pearl, trained by Kevin Prendergast, should be good enough to give McDonogh his second winner of the afternoon.
Kinane should enjoy an equally profitable afternoon, with success aboard the luckless Bricks And Porter in the Ladbrokes Highly Entertaining Handicap, and Ellens Boy in the Stackallen Maiden.
The latter caught the eye when fourth to Queen Of Rap at Tipperary last Thursday, and should be capable of opening his account with Kinane on board.
Meanwhile, at Gowran Park, Johnny Murtagh is expected to make his mark with De Roberto in the Summer Sundays At Gowran Park Handicap. Eddie Lynam's charge shaped well on his seasonal debut when third to Regaleya at Leopardstown two weeks ago, and he should be too good for last season's Birdcatcher Nursery winner Taqseem.
