FA PREMIERSHIP WIGAN ATHLETIC 1 PORTSMOUTH 2
HARRY REDKNAPP has again proved himself to be the master of the great escape as a stunning comefrom-behind win at Wigan guaranteed Portsmouth another season of Premiership football. The away side were on the ropes during the first half but Redknapp changed it around at half time and reaped the rewards.
With Premiership survival in their own hands, Portsmouth had been roared on by a 5,000-strong travelling army but it was Wigan who started the brighter with Henri Camara giving early notice of his intent with a clever shot that Dean Kiely comfortably saved. As the half went on both Svetoslav Todorov and Benjani had great chances to put Portsmouth ahead but both fluffed their lines. It was a similar story at the other end where Henri was running riot but when he did put the ball in the net after 15 minutes it was incorrectly ruled out for offside. Indeed, after missing another two chances it looked like it would not be the Senegal striker's day but then David Thompson's inswinging cross was headed goalwards and Camara was on hand to tap home.
Redknapp reshuffled his side extensively at half time and Portsmouth gradually took control before grabbing the all-important equaliser on 62 minutes with Mwaruwari finally scoring his first goal for the club when Matthew Taylor's angled shot through the six-yard box bounced off the left-hand post, falling kindly to Mwaruwari to nod home from three yards.
It was all Portsmouth now and their reward came in the 70th minute when Gary Teale was sent off for a clear handball in blocking Mwaruwari's goal-bound header. That allowed Taylor to beat Mike Pollitt from the penalty spot to send the Portsmouth fans delirious. They had chances to seal it but, in the end, they had done enough.
