KILLARNEY'S popular three-day May Festival gets underway today, and the meeting shares the racing stage with an all-flat card at Gowran Park. The feature event at the Kilkenny venue is the PricewaterhouseCoopers Classic Trial, a mile-anda-half event that is flattered by its title.
The contest has been won in the past by one or two geldings who wouldn't have looked out of place in the Triumph Hurdle, but the Tommy Stack-trained Disclosure may buck that trend by collecting at the expense of Puerto Rico, who would appear to be the more-fancied of Aidan O'Brien's two runners.
The selection has the benefit of two outings under his belt already this term, so he won't be lacking in fitness.
Seamus Heffernan's mount Puerto Rico, meanwhile, was successful in a well-contested seven-furlong maiden at the Curragh on his only career start last season and will improve from the run, as will Royal Intrigue from the Dermot Weld yard who disappointed on his reappearance at the Curragh.
A case can be made for a number of the runners in the listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes, with Weld's previous course winner Michikabu, Danehill Music, from the David Wachman stable, Sina Cova, Homegrown, Galatee and Talwin all in with chances of success.
Danehill Music, in particular, was not disgraced last time when third to subsequent Tetrarch Stakes scorer Decado over seven furlongs at the Curragh. He is sure to appreciate the longer trip on this occasion, while Galatee, the very impressive nine-length winner of a Naas maiden at the first time of asking, cannot be left out of the reckoning either.
The well-bred filly created a very favourable impression on that occasion and should be capable of stepping up in class in the style of an above-average performer.
Yario, from Kevin Prendergast's stable, will be wellfancied for the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden on the strength of last month's fast-finishing Leopardstown effort where he looked to be a little unlucky behind Finsceal Beo.
The John Oxx-trained Diyla should be another one to gain compensation under Fran Berry in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden.
Meanwhile, at Killarney the weights for the Murphys Irish Stout Handicap Hurdle are headed by Michael O'Brien's 2005 Pierse and Totesport Hurdle winner, Essex, and the Willie Mullins-trained Adamant Approach, who was successful in the same Leopardstown race in 2002.
The latter hasn't won since then, but has run some good races in defeat. Nevertheless, it may pay to look further down the handicap for the answer, and one that appeals is Templelusk from the Eoin Griffin yard. He has been running reasonably well, without managing to get his head in front, and may get his turn today.
