Live the high life in a trendy Temple Bar penthouse
Valerie Shanley

FORGET the noisy nightlife and bawdy stags and hens . . .Temple Bar is still the most chic and trendy of Dublin city-centre addresses.

This bright, modern, twobed penthouse at 24 Crane Yard, Crane Lane, epitomises the youthful appeal and modernity of the rejuvenated Dublin 2 district which was dubbed the city's 'cultural quarter' in the l990s and which is as famous among young European weekenders as the capital itself.

It's well known, too, as the birthplace of some of Ireland's famous sons, including 18th-century politician Henry Grattan, who didn't have far to walk to work . . .the imposing Bank of Ireland, seat of the old Irish parliament, marks the eastern boundary of Temple Bar.

The cobblestone streets stretch westwards, parallel to the river, up to Christ Church, and so 21st century inhabitants undoubtedly also relish not only being within walking distance of work, but being right next to galleries, ethnic restaurants, the Irish Film Institute, fashionable boutiques, the Temple Bar weekend market and numerous other amenities.

Simple, clean lines and muted colours define the contemporary style of the 80 square-metre (860 squarefoot) penthouse, with plenty of maple in the flooring and fitted units combined with full-height glazing all enhancing the natural light.

This is most apparent in the main reception room, with a wall of glazing which in turn opens directly onto a terrace running the full length of the apartment. The terrace has a westerly aspect, taking full benefit of the afternoon and evening sunshine and also those rooftop views.

Fitted units and worktops are arranged along either side of the galley-shaped separate kitchen, with appliances neatly integrated plus a handy breakfast bar with high stools underneath.

Both bedrooms are doubles. The master has an en suite with shower room; the separate, main bathroom is fitted to a very high spec and has pristine white tiling.

Kitchen appliances are included in the sale. Central heating is natural gas-fired.

There is an option with the sale to buy a parking space.

With everything a big capital city has to offer right on the doorstep, however, plus bus routes, Luas stops and Dart stations all within walking distance, the need for a car, or space to park it, may not be a priority for the new owner.
