Ona Clare day you can see forever. . .
Valerie Shanley

THE seaside village of Doolin, right out on the west coast of Co Clare, is regarded as something of an artistic haven, whether for impromptu traditional music sessions or painterly inspiration from that ruggedly wild and beautiful land and sea.

Where better then, to build a modern Irish home, oriented to take in those spectacular views of the Twelve Pins or the Aran Islands rising up from the sapphire-blue Atlantic?

This large, 372 squaremetre (4,000 square-foot), architect-designed property, set on one acre at Upper Carnan, is a far cry from the traditional thatched cottage or generic bungalow, and includes individual features that are sure to have great appeal.

Among these are the soaring ceilings which enhance the space of the generouslysized rooms throughout, luxurious en-suite bathrooms, one of which has a jacuzzi, under-floor heating (there are no radiators to spoil the look), and a fully-fitted solid ash kitchen with a double Belfast sink, Rangemaster stove and integrated appliances.

The heart of the house is that open-plan kitchen, which flows seamlessly to a dining room and comfortable living room. With the surrounding landscape being such an integral part of the character of the house, this room, like many of the others, has views from the bay window right across to the Aran Islands . . . a telescope currently takes pride of place to encourage closer inspection.

Elsewhere, the accommodation is bright and styled with shades at the lighter end of the colour palette.

The house opens up from the very large entrance hall which is defined by two floor levels in feature tiling and pale timber boards. Patio doors lead out to a decked terrace.

The open-plan kitchen and living area has a utility room adjacent; from here the space leads to the back hall with a side door and also a guest cloakroom.

A second sitting room, styled in more formal manner with a marble surround fireplace and centre ceiling rose, adjoins the sun room which, in turn, opens back on to the deck.

The hall leads on to the bedrooms, the first of which has a fireplace and is extremely bright, courtesy of three windows. This room also has a fully-shelved walk-in wardrobe and en-suite with jacuzzi.

The second bedroom, also with three windows, has an en suite/wet room with power shower. A small study completes the ground floor accommodation.

The landing overlooks the entrance hall; leading off are two more bedrooms, both with fitted wardrobes and fully tiled en suites bathrooms.

Outside, and beyond the grounds of the one-acre site, lies all that Co Clare has to offer. To the north is that botanist's delight, the Burren, while to the south is Lahinch, whose beach is rapidly becoming known as a surfer's paradise. A house, and a county, with just about everything then.
