TOP American police officer Kathleen O'Toole is expected in Dublin later this week to formally accept the position of head of the new Garda Inspectorate. O'Toole, police commissioner in Boston, is due to have her appointment confirmed at this week's cabinet meeting.
Her recruitment is seen as a coup for the government because of her high standing in police circles in the United States. She acted as an adviser to Chris Patten when he was overseeing the review of policing in Northern Ireland, under the Good Friday Agreement.
The new Garda Inspectorate will be charged with ensuring that the force performs its duties to the highest possible standards.
O'Toole will be assisted by two deputies who are now being recruited. The position of head of the Garda Inspectorate carries a minimum 115,000 salary.
