AIB LEAGUE DIVISION THREE FINAL CLONAKILTY 19 SUTTONIANS 12
CLONAKILTY overcame a six-point deficit at Lansdowne Road yesterday to claim the Division Three title.
The Cork side were handed their first opportunity on eight minutes after Suttonians had been penalised for handling in the ruck. Gary Gribb struck the posts with his subsequent effort, but he was successful moments later with a penalty.
Clonakilty stretched their lead midway through the half through Gribb, but Suttonians began to come into the game soon after, and with three minutes remaining in the first half they finally made the breakthorugh and struck for their first try as Suttonian's right wing, Darragh Mulligan, collected to go over on the right-hand side.
Suttonians were unsuccessful with the conversion, before Gribb hit the posts with a penalty attempt in injury time.
The second half was only three minutes old when Suttonians went in front for the first time, as the Clonakilty defence stood still to allow David Walsh in for a score under the posts. Suttonians outhalf Paddy Maguire converted, but from there Suttonians were rarely allowed out of their own half by a dogged Clonakilty pack.
After 13 minutes of sustained pressure yielded nothing, Clonakilty finally regained the lead on the hour when Eoin Scannell took a pass off Gribb to score under the posts. Gribb then added the conversion, a penalty and a drop goal in the final seconds.
