IRISH drinks company Margarita Ice has received a late call-up for next month's World Cup from the Croatian national football team.
The company has been approached by a representative of the Croatian Football Federation (CFF) to sponsor the team at the World Cup finals, which are due to take place in Germany in four weeks time.
Rory O'Driscoll, an Irish entrepreneur who bought the international rights to the margarita-flavoured alcopop four years ago, said the Croatians approached him last week, following the launch of Margarita Ice in the Balkan country. "They want me to sponsor them, " he said.
O'Driscoll said he has yet to discuss terms with the Croatian federation and does not yet have a clear idea of how much any sponsorship would cost. He will hold further discussions with the CFF this week, he said.
It has been a busy month for Margarita Ice.
The company is in the midst of a dispute over a 90,000 invoice from marketing consultancy Inventive.
Dublin-based Inventive presented a winding-up petition to the High Court on 5 May in a bid to recover money it says it is owed by Margarita Ice.The petition is due to be heard in the High Court this week.
O'Driscoll said that the reason the debt has not been paid is because Margarita Ice is disputing the size of the bill and will fight the petition.
He said he is more concerned with securing international distribution partners for Margarita Ice.
"We've got a manufacturer in Russia and we're going into America, " he said.
Margarita Ice has recently been launched in 11 European countries, including Croatia, Spain and Sweden. O'Driscoll said the company has invested 4.8m in marketing and other expenses as it sought approval to sell the alcoholic beverage in various markets.
Margarita Ice has been available in Ireland for the past year. O'Driscoll would not divulge sales figures, but said he expects the brand to produce multi-million euro turnover now that it has begun international distribution.
"I like the idea of any time of the day or night, whether I'm asleep or I'm awake, someone is drinking Margarita Ice, " he said.
