THE presenter of RTE's new evening radio programme, Drivetime, which replaces 5-7 Live, will be announced this week. Sources within the station revealed that legal affairs correspondent Mary Wilson will fill the slot.
Wilson (45), from Tipperary is married to RTE sports editor Tony O'Donoghue and has one child.
Privately, some members of RTE's staff are unhappy with the lack of communication over last week's reshuffle. The future of some high-profile names is now in doubt with speculation that some may move to News Talk 106 FM.
The programmes Mystery Train with John Kelly, The John Creedon Show and Myles Dungan's Rattlebag have all been dropped from the schedule.
Despite Dungan having over two years remaining on his contract, he will be taking unpaid leave to study in the US. Creedon has been given the so-called 'red-eye' slot, hosting a programme from midnight to 2am. RTE said that "Kelly has decided to concentrate on other broadcasting commitments".
Dave Fanning, who will be 27 years in 2FM next week, has made the surprise move to Radio One where he will present Drivetime Express from 7pm to 8pm. Fanning told the Sunday Tribune that it was not a case of the DJ "growing up".
"You must be joking! That's never going to happen." Fanning said his move came about when "I was given an offer I couldn't refuse and I didn't".
Sports broadcaster Des Cahill, who hosts the hugely popular Sportscall on Monday evenings, has also been added to the drivetime package, where he will present Drivetime Sport with Des Cahill from 6.30pm to 7pm. When contacted by the Sunday Tribune Cahill said, "To be honest we are only meeting about the reshuffle next week so I am in the dark about what exactly is happening until then."
The big winner in the reshuffle was Derek Mooney, who will host a new show between 3pm and 5pm. The schedule will come into effect in September.
