Biarritz were ill-served by big screen bias

IN my view, the Irish supporters are the best in the world. They follow the team wherever they go, they are enthusiastic, they are respectful and at Biarritz we try to emulate that.

However, I think it was totally unfair that during the Heineken Cup final in Cardiff the big screen regularly showed the crowds on the streets of Cork and Limerick, while they didn't show anything from Biarritz. We also had two giant screens in our stadium with thousands of people watching it but virtually nothing of that was shown.

I have written to the European Rugby Cup (ERC) to complain because I think the broadcaster in the stadium should have been neutral. It was Sky and obviously they chose to show what they wanted. For me, it's the same situation as when the big screen picks up some foul play from one team but doesn't show the foul play from the other team. It's not fair.

I'm not saying that it was a determining issue in the match but the fact that the Munster players said after the game that it lifted them, then it was a factor. That's not me saying it, it's the Irish players. If the footage from Munster had not been shown then anything could have happened. The broadcaster should be neutral. It's there to report the match, not to give an incentive to either of the two teams. I don't mind what they show outside the stadium but inside the stadium the broadcaster should be neutral.

Another thing that I have pointed out to the ERC is the organisation surrounding Cardiff as a venue. Because of the semi-final between Munster and Leinster, Irish fans knew one of them would certainly be in the final and therefore they could make all the arrangements regarding travel one month in advance.

So, after our semi-final we struggled to find accommodation for the team and had to call over 100 hotels because everything had been booked solid by Irish fans. We finally found one but it was not the one we wanted and not as convenient as we had hoped for. The ERC should have taken steps to make sure both teams were protected.

With the fans, meanwhile, obviously with the choice of Cardiff it would have been known one year in advance that the venue would be an advantage to an Irish team and this proved to be the case.

Our fans were outnumbered 20-1. A lot of our supporters had to travel to Bristol because there were too many Irish planes already booked.

Again, the ERC should have made sure both sets of supporters were treated fairly when flying. It should have been ensured that Cardiff airport first took an equal number of flights of fans from both countries, and then have them queued. But that was not the case. There were 65 flights from Ireland booked a month in advance of us. I have no complaints with the choice of Cardiff . . . it's a wonderful stadium . . . but everyone knows that the city has a small airport. Steps should have been taken with the airport administration to accommodate supporters on a fair basis. Unfortunately they were not.

I told the ERC to look into that for the future. The past is the past and we can't change it, but if you don't say what went wrong then such problems will never be solved . . . for both teams, whoever they are. I wrote to Munster as well though and told them they won the match, no question about it. The solo try of Mr Stringer was, at this level, something exceptional. Biarritz will be back though, don't worry.
