TAXI drivers will ballot later this month on further industrial action, with a national strike a possibility due to new proposals by the Taxi Regulator to change the taxi plate identification system.
There was limited strike action last night after taxi drivers in Cork called for work stoppages nationwide.
According to Tommy Gorman, President of the National Taxi Driver's Union, the action was not supported by all taxi drivers, as no ballot had taken place.
Gorman said that further industrial action over the summer was a possibility, although the NTDU is currently examining its legal options in relation to the regulator's recommendations, which taxi drivers claim will lead to a massive loss of earnings.
"We are looking at the possibility of resolving this through the courts, " said Gorman. "There is a lot of anger over this issue but it would be more desirable to let the High Court decide upon it rather than taking people out of work."
