THE head of Irish Psychics Live has threatened to sue RTE over claims made on the Pat Kenny show that the service offered by the company was "valueless" and exploited vulnerable people.
The Broadcasting Complaints Commission (BCC) upheld a complaint by Irish Psychics Live in relation to a segment on RTE Radio One's Today With Pat Kenny last November. However, when reading out the BCC judgement last Thursday, Kenny prefaced the statement by standing by the original claims and reiterating his belief that the company was fraudulent.
Tom Higgins of Irish Psychics Live has lodged a second complaint with the BCC over Kenny's comments and has not ruled out legal action. Higgins claims to have been defamed by the comments, which included what he alleges were factual errors in relation to the company's pricing structure.
Higgins claimed that Kenny's remarks were "even worse" than his original comments last November and wondered why the state broadcaster had launched a campaign against "a perfectly innocent company".
A spokesman for RTE said this was not the first time the station had prefixed a BCC judgement in order to "put it into context" and give background on the ruling. The spokesman confirmed that Kenny's comments were scripted and had been cleared by the station's management before being read out on air.
