GLOBAL popstar Christina Aguilera's closest tie with Ireland may be the fact that she grew up in a Pittsburgh suburb called Wexford but Ireland does have a Cristina Aguilera of its very own. Spelled without the 'h', Cristina Aguilera lives in Tralee and, like her namesake, is fanatical about music and dance.
The Irish-based Aguilera is originally from Argentina. "I moved here three years ago to improve my English and ended up meeting the love of my life so I have stayed here. I am happily married to Sean and we have an 11-month-old baby daughter Tamara, " Aguilera said.
Cristina worked as an educational psychologist in Argentina before moving to Ireland."Last year I was involved in the launch of the St Patrick's Day festival in Tralee and after that I had a lot of people ask me if my name really was Cristina Aguilera. I have to keep explaining that a name like 'Cristina Aguilera' is to Argentina what a name like 'Mary Murphy' is to Ireland. A lot of people think I am joking when I tell them my name especially as I have a friend called Sinead O'Connor."
In keeping with her Grammy Award-winning namesake, Aguilera is as passionate about dance and music as the international superstar. "I hold tango classes in Tralee and I believe dance is a really good way of integrating people from different cultures.
I hope to teach traditional Argentinean dance at the Siamsa Tire Theatre in Tralee if they can get funding. I also sing as an amateur and I enjoy Irish musicians like Bono and Enya. I really would like to sing with Bono and even do the tango with him, " she said.
Aguilera is not the only Irish person to share her name with a global star, as west Belfast has its very own David and Victoria Beckham.
Elizabeth and Gerard Donnelly changed their names by deed poll in May 2003 to the names of their heroes, Victoria and David, and they even put up a Beckingham Palace plaque outside their Andersonstown home last year.
Their house is a shrine to Manchester United and is adorned with posters, signed pictures, ornaments and even has carpet displaying the Red Devils' crest, inside the house's red and white walls.
The couple were disappointed when their heroes left Manchester for Madrid after David Beckham's move to Real Madrid but their love of the Beckhams was such that they now support the two teams.
"No one calls us Gerard or Elizabeth anymore. We don't see those as our names and everyone has got used to calling us the Beckhams, " David Beckham (the Belfast one) told the Anderstown News. Shortly after they changed their names, the couple got a surprise phone call from the world famous footballer himself offering them his blessing.
Despite well-publicised marital difficulties between the real Posh and Becks, the Belfast Beckhams, who have been married for over 12 years, believe that neither couple will separate. "It would be sad if they split up but I don't think they will. They are like us . . .
inseparable, " the Belfast Beckham said.
