RYANAIR is set to increase the pressure on Aer Lingus by basing additional aircraft in Dublin and launching up to six new routes on top of the 18 destinations it began serving from Dublin last week. The company is likely to announce the new routes within the next four to six weeks, according to informed sources. It is understood that Ryanair will not start serving the new destinations before December, when a new check-in facility in the basement of Dublin Airport comes into service.
Having previously refused to expand its operations at Dublin Airport because of what the airline said were excessive charges, Ryanair began an aggressive expansion programme last year. In December, it announced 18 routes, to cities such as Marseille, Milan and Bratislava. Ryanair began serving those routes last week, using a temporary boarding facility installed at Dublin Airport ahead of the completion of the new Pier D. The airport's capacity will be further increased following the redevelopment of the basement floor to accommodate up to 24 new check-in desks, and Ryanair is set to take advantage of the new facility when it comes on stream at the end of this year.
Aviation industry sources said Ryanair will announce at least four, and possibly six, new routes in the coming weeks.
