WITH TV shows like House Hunters, About the House and Holiday Home Detectives achieving consistently high viewership ratings, RTE it could be said, already caters adequately for the national obsession with propertyrelated issues.
Now, however, the state broadcaster has gone a step further, linking up with two high-profile independent property companies to offer internet users a controversial new web-based real estate service.
Visitors to the RTE site can use a specialised search engine to look up potential properties for rental or purchase as well as availing of advice on finance and mortgages.
Powered by MyHome. ie, the search facility allows users access to information on properties listed by up to 700 estate agents from around the country.
The site also offers a financial advice service. Managed by mortgage advisory firm, Ezhome, this service includes information for first-time buyers, mortgage approval guides and finance calculators, as well as a list of options for home insurance and life assurance.
RTE has rejected the accusation, levelled by some critics, that it's inappropriate for the state broadcaster to use its website to become involved in a commercial venture with two specific private companies.
"What the venture does is allow us offer an enhanced and extended service to our clients, " said Conor Mullen, commercial director of RTE Publishing.
"These are two well-established and respected companies . . . leaders in their field, in fact. We're well aware of our responsibilities in this regard, so quality content is what we're aiming for."
The RTE website last month achieved almost 22 million 'hits', the highest total since it was set up exactly 10 years ago. RTE. ie/property also contains links to pages advertising various property related-TV and radio programmes on the home channels.
Conor Mullen said that licence payers do not fund the station's online service.
"The website is self-funding. It does not receive state monies. It's a commercial enterprise. In that regard, the new facility shouldn't be regarded as the equivalent of a television programme."
"Our aim is to provide even wider access to Ireland's largest database of homes on the market, " says Jim Miley, chief executive of Myhome. ie.
And Seamus McGrath, managing director of Ezhome, said that "by bringing together excellent content and independent mortgage advice, RTE has created a true one-stop shop for property".
However, the Consumers' Association of Ireland is advising site-users to be aware that what they read online will not necessarily be independent advice.
"Without a doubt, users should be wary, " spokesman Dermot Jewell said.
"These are companies that advertise on RTE, so there is already a commercial link.
And that needs to be borne in mind by anyone using the site.
"Here we have a highly acknowledged national broadcaster promoting the commercial views of what are probably two of its biggest advertisers. That's the reality of it."
