Inishowen shoreline turns up a treasure
Valerie Shanley

FOR THOSE who love their Irish history, Kinnego Bay, near Inishowen Head at the tip of Co Donegal, may sound familiar due to its dramatic role in the story of the Spanish Armada. La Trinidad Valencera, one of the largest vessels in that fateful 16th century expedition, floundered in a storm in the bay.

An impressive collection of artefacts has been retrieved from the wreck over the past few decades by the City of Derry Sub Aqua Club, and is on view in the Tower Museum.

Within walking distance of that sandy beach at Kinnego is this former post office, the Lower House, dating back to 1864. The property, on one acre of grounds, a simple country house with great living space, has that period charm of days gone by. Just a short drive up the road is the fishing village of Greencastle, with its maritime museum, restaurants and a car ferry across to Magilligan, Co Derry, while the seaside town of Moville is also within around 20 minutes reach.

Accommodation comprises three bedrooms, all with fine sea views, and a large (32') double aspect living room, with its two original fireplaces and flagged stone floor.

A door leads from the living room directly to the kitchen, also double aspect, which has a range of farmhouse presses, original wooden shelving and a Belfast sink.

Up on the first floor are the three bedrooms, the main room boasting windows on three sides and the original fireplace. Bedroom two is currently used as a study, with a series of book shelves and cast-iron fireplace. The third bedroom is used as a spacious dressing room. A large bathroom, with both bath and electric shower, completes the accommodation at first floor level.

Attached to the main house is a utility room with fitted shelving and, directly above this, is an additional storage area with exposed roof timbers. A large detached stone building with red painted barn doors and window is also used as a large storage space, but could be converted to a studio.

Lower House is approached along a private, tree-lined driveway. The gardens are mostly in lawn, with mature shrubs and hedging.

Everywhere around, the eye takes in the dramatic scenery, while the sound is of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocks on the shore below.
