Listowel for ?40m revamp
Kieran Flynn

A NEW 40m town quarter featuring retail units and leisure facilities is planned for Listowel, Co Kerry. The development, on a six acre site to the north of the town will include a community hall, cafes and a creche, along with a gymnasium and sauna.

Underground parking for 430 cars will be provided.

The new development is expected to create as many as 600 new jobs in Listowel as well as stimulating commercial and consumer activity locally.

The population of the north Kerry town is expected to increase to 25,000 in the near future and the new centre will be located in the area where most residential expansion is likely to take place.

The design team behind the planned new quarter, James Toomey Architects, is promising a "high quality contemporary design including a terraced landscaped area with its own courtyard entrance".

The development will cover 8,361sq m (90,000sq ft) and will include 20 retail units.

Some 4,645sq m (50,000sq ft) has been set aside for a major anchor retail outlet. A 929sq m (10,000sq ft) of finished space will be given over to the county council as a community hall for the people of Listowel's own use.

"It is envisaged that the hall will be used for local cultural facilities, such as a theatre for the town's three drama groups, and for literary events and poetry readings.

"In this way, " says architect, James Toomey, "we aim to provide a focus for all sorts of activities, augmenting the town's existing resources."

Increased leisure facilities will mean local folk can in future avoid the current problem of having to travel long distances to avail of amenities in other towns.

"Not only should this new development entice funds into Listowel, but it should also contribute to the town's future development as a focal point for visitors and tourists to north Kerry, " he adds.

"We've applied for planning permission and if everything goes according to schedule we hope to have the quarter open by Christmas 2007."
