OVER the past two years award-winning documentary filmmaker Edel O'Brien has spent weeks in the bath. During her travels to Barcelona she was inspired by the colourful mosaics of Antoni Gaudi and turned her attention to all things tiles.
"Broken cups, plates, tiles and mirrors . . . I couldn't resist them. I began digging in bins and scrambling though skips to gather other people's broken crockery."
The result of her collecting is a wonderful mosaic bathroom in her home at No 12 Knocknarea Avenue, in Drimnagh, Dublin 12.
The abstract mural was inspired by the time spent filming in Sri Lanka after the Tsunami in South East Asia.
Less than two-and-a-half miles from the city, the end of terrace house is just off the Crumlin road and minutes from the Luas. Our Lady's Hospital is local and there is an abundance of good schools nearby, including Loreto College, and excellent shopping facilities at Superquinn, Tesco and Lidl.
Edel's The Farmer Wants a Wife film for ITV won a Bafta award in 1992 and her more recent RTE documentary Making Babies, where she followed young couples having IVF treatment was ground breaking television.
The downstairs area of No 12 has been extended to create open-plan, bright and spacious living accommodation.
The watery theme continues into the kitchen with aqua coloured units and mosaic tiles.
The house is in excellent condition throughout with a contemporary Villeroy & Boch bathroom suite and newly installed zoned gasfired central heating.
There are wooden and ceramic tiled floors throughout and cast-iron feature fireplaces.
Outside, there is a large secluded, mature back garden with a decked area and a conservatory
