McKEE WINS THRILLING 400m
IN SANTRY Paul McKee could not have given himself a better send off to the European Championships next week when winning a thrilling 400 metres at the Dublin International meeting at a wind blown Santry Stadium yesterday.
The 29 year old Belfast athlete came with powerful piece of running on the home straight to take the prized scalp of the South African, Ofentse Mogawane, who has several fast times to his credit this season, including a 45.11.
But yesterday Mogawane met his match when it came to a battle with McKee closing the gap all the way before edging in front two strides from the line to win in 46.28.
McKee's victory came just a week after "nishing second in the National Championship and after going through some dif"cult times with injury and illness in 2004 and 2005 after setting his national record of 45.58 in 2002.
WEBB DENIES WIE A MAIDEN VICTORY
Australia's Karrie Webb denied 16-year-old Michelle Wie her breakthrough professional victory and also left England's Laura Davies disappointed today when she shot a final round 68 to win the Evian Masters in France.
It was a third win of a great comeback year for the 31-yearold Australian and she finished on 16-under par 272 and one shot ahead of both Davies, who shaved the hole from 12-feet for an eagle at the 18th in a 67, and Wie, who also birdied the last for a 68.
Playing in her 31st LPGA tournament, Wie has now had 13 top 10 finishes, including seven from 11 majors. She also finished second here last year.
It was the third time from six LPGA starts this year that she has finished one shot outside a play-off.
"But I think this is the closest I've gotten (to winning), " she suggested.
"I played solid until the end and my game has been very consistent recently. Winning isn't as easy as it would seem.
"But I'm not frustrated at not having won yet. Today was an achievement in itself."
Davies was also heartened by coming so close to ending a 28month drought stretching back to the 2004 Women's Australian Open. Her last win on the LPGA Tour was over five years at a tournament in Rochester.
LEEDS LUCKY TO BEAT FOREST IN FRIENDLY
Leeds came from behind to claim a fortuitous 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest and return to winning ways ahead of the big kick-off next weekend. David Healy "red the Yorkshire giants ahead after just three minutes but strikes from Nathan Tyson and Grant Holt either side of the break put Colin Calderwood's men in command.
However, Eirik Bakke's 20-yard free-kick and Wes Morgan's owngoal eight minutes from time spared Leeds further humiliation following their pre-season defeats against Hartlepool and Scunthorpe during the past week.
Leeds host Norwich next Saturday in their Championship opener but a largely disjointed display from Kevin Blackwell's men will hardly have the Canaries quaking in their boots.
Former Forest favourite Steve Stone received a rapturous applause prior to kick-off from the home supporters and it was he who orchestrated the opening goal after just three minutes.
Gary Kelly sent the former England winger scampering down the right "ank and Stone sent over a low cross which Healy dispatched clinically from six yards.
However, Forest came back strongly and were level three minutes before the break when Tyson capitalised on an error from Leeds goalkeeper Neil Sullivan to bundle the ball home from inside the six-yard box.
And they edged further ahead two minutes after the break when Tyson's bustling striker partner Holt powerfully headed home from Julian Bennett's left-wing cross.
Leeds drew level on 55 minutes when Bakke's quick-thinking saw him ri"e home a low free-kick from 20 yards.
