Stonemason's home is up your Streete
Valerie Shanley

IT'S not often that the work of the stone mason is justly admired these days, but this lovely old farmhouse, just 15 minutes from Mullingar in the heart of the Co Westmeath countryside, has been lovingly restored by such a craftsman.

The owner of Conracauske used his expertise not only to bring the three-bed period house back to life, but also on a number of stone stables adjoining which are now presented to the market in possibly finer fettle than when first built.

Set near the village of Streete, en route to picturesque Edgeworthstown, the property is new to the market this week and comes with its own land of 2.5 acres.

The rural feel is enhanced with a number of mature shrubs, currently in flower and framing the entrance.

Through the stone porch and the green front door, the interior of the house lives up to that country-charm exterior.

The first room is the small sittingroom with stone openhearth fireplace. Next to this is a larger livingroom with flag floor and cast-iron, solid- fuel stove. There is a small cloakroom leading off.

The kitchen is a generous size (20ft x 18ft 8in), has a stone floor, solid-oak fitted cupboards and is warmed courtesy of a Stanley solid fuel range.

Upstairs, off the landing, are three bedrooms, all with carpets and one with built-in wardrobes. The bathroom has both a bath and Triton electric T90 shower, while the floor is tiled.

During restoration, central heating was installed and the house fully insulated, making it cosy and welcoming. The restored stables could also convert to other use, subject to planning permission. Streete village is approximately 65 miles from Dublin.
