Emperor set to rule for O'Brien in top Curragh sprint
IRISH PREVIEW Claire Barry

CAN trainer Aidan O'Brien do it again? The Ballydoyle maestro has won seven of the last eight runnings of the Group 1 Independent Waterford Wedgewood Phoenix Stakes, and he relies on Holy Roman Emperor to continue his domination of the valuable sprint at the Curragh this afternoon.

Kieren Fallon's mount was a good winner at Leopardstown on his debut, but never really figured in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he was possibly unsuited by the fast ground, before returning to winning ways in the Railway Stakes at the Curragh on Derby day.

Holy Roman Emperor renews rivalry with Drayton, who filled the runner-up spot behind him in the Railway Stakes. Tommy Stack's charge was earlier successful in his three previous starts, and seems to be improving with every run. Another bold showing can be expected.

Brazilian Bride, from the in-form Kevin Prendergast stable, carries the colours of the sponsors, and is another one to consider on the basis of her two wins to date, together with the sole English challenger Hellvelyn, who is unbeaten in his only three outings, culminating in a decisive victory in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. Holy Roman Emperor still gets the vote to prevail.

In contrast to the feature race, there are seven English raiders for the Group 3 Patrick P. O'Leary Memorial Phoenix Sprint Stakes, in which the Michael Halfordtrained Miss Sally bravely flies the flag for the homeside. Miss Sally is sure to give a good account of herself, but it is hard to oppose the Dandy Nicholls-trained Moss Vale, who has been in good form since winning the Greenlands Stakes at the Curragh earlier in the season, and was not disgraced when a close-up fifth in the July Cup at Newmarket last time.

Brazilian Bride's stablecompanion Mustameet is bidding to win his fourth race in a row in the Group 2 United Arab Emirates Royal Whip Stakes, but he won't have matters all his own way in this competitive four runner field.

Jim Bolger's Heliostatic made all to win the Weld Stakes at Leopardstown a few weeks ago, while Chelsea Rose ran her usual game race to finish fourth behind Ouija Board and Alexander Goldrun in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood eight days ago.

Adian O'Brien's Theann can step up on his second placing behind Johnstown Lad to land the opening Grangecon Stud EBF Maiden, while his stable-mate, the much-touted Danehill filly Nell Gwyn puts her reputation on the line in the Loder EBF Fillies Race.

She is sure to be sent off a warm favourite, but the Declan Gillespie-trained In Safe Hands, who finished second behind Alexander Tango last time, with Four Sins back in third, may represent better value.

Racing also takes place at Downpatrick, where James Lambe's English import Torrid Kentavr, winner of 10 races across the water, looks nicely treated in the Pat O'Hare Bookmakers Rosebank Hurdle.
