ROBERT WINSTON yesterday vehemently protested his innocence over charges brought by the Horseracing Regulatory Authority following an investigation into alleged corruption in racing.
He is one of four jockeys including champion jockey Kieren Fallon facing charges along with five unlicensed individuals, one a former bookmaker.
Winston expressed his surprise, especially after he was released from bail last month without charge from the long-running investigation by the City of London Police.
"I wasn't expecting to get charged but I knew it (the investigation) had been lingering for the last couple of years, " he told At The Races.
"I knew there was something lurking but I didn't expect to be charged, but as I've made it well aware to everybody, I've had no involvement or connection with this bookmaker or these other people.
"I've never done anything wrong apart from go out there and try to ride winners and do my best on my horses.
"I'm just annoyed and disappointed, especially after getting the police thing out of the way and then having this thing come up as well.
"I'll fight it out all the way.
I've a very clear conscience.
"I've not done anything wrong and I'll prove that in a matter of time.
"Seeing myself in the papers, that doesn't worry me at all. It's what trainers and what owners think. It's what the general public think, and to be quite honest I've had a hell of a lot of support.
"I'm not too worried. My conscience is clear and I will prove myself innocent.
"I think I've got a hearing on September 27 at the HRA.
I'll go there with my solicitor and my barrister and we'll take it from there."
