THE Group three Desmond Stakes at the Curragh this afternoon has attracted a small but competitive field, in which the Jim Bolger-trained Heliostatic will be fancied to return to winning ways.
Kevin Manning's mount ran well below par over this course last Sunday but the ground conditions are likely to be more in his favour today.
Heliostatic was successful over 10 furlongs in the Meld Stakes last month, and appreciates an ease in the ground, but the drop back to a mile may count against him. Tom Hogan's good servant Common World, in contrast, will relish the trip, and any further rain will aid his cause.
Common World is sure to be involved in the finish, but there is a slight preference for the Aidan O'Brien-trained Arabian Prince, who attracted support in the betting when runner-up to the unbeaten Danak in the Platinum Stakes at Cork last time.
Arch Rebel, meanwhile, is a previous course and distance winner, but Noel Meade's charge disappointed at Roscommon in early July.
The Desmond Stakes shares top billing with the listed Ballyroan Stakes, in which the John Oxx-trained Kastoria goes on trial for the St Leger. The Curragh Cup heroine is more effective on fastish ground, but would appear to have an excellent chance of success here at the expense of Mark Prescott's regular visitor Foreign Affairs, who won the Challenge Stakes last month.
The Tramore Festival comes to a close this afternoon, where Val O'Brien's veteran Half Barrell bids to add to his tally of wins with further success in the Queally Group Handicap Chase.
O'Brien has a good strike rate at this venue, and Half Barrell has the added benefit of inform jockey Paddy Flood.
Manjoe wasn't beaten that far when seventh in the William Hill Galway Plate, but is best suited by top of the ground conditions, which he won't encounter today.
