WELSH EMPEROR made all the running to land a brave success in The Sportsman Newspaper Hungerford Stakes. The 13-2 shot was smartly away under Jamie Spencer and bowled along in front as 5-6 favourite Caradak took up a watching brief just in behind.
However, jockey Frankie Dettori was under pressure two furlongs out on the market leader as Welsh Emperor moved up a gear and it was left to Jeremy to throw down a challenge.
Tom Tate's charge pulled out all the stops for Spencer though, finding a bit extra to hold on by half a length. After looking set to fade out of the finish, Caradak got a second wind and ran on again for third, finishing a length adrift.
Meanwhile Abby Road is to be stepped up in class after proving too quick for her rivals in the Newvoicemedia St Hugh's Stakes. Dettori had Brian Meehan's 9-2 chance in the lead from the outset in the listed contest. She never looked like being caught throughout the five furlongs and had a length to spare over Vale Of Belvoir at the line.
"She's very good, " enthused Meehan. "She did really well at Ripon last time when Kevin (Darley) gave her a great ride and let her do what she wanted to. She's got a lot of speed and really enjoyed herself so I think we'll go for the Flying Childers."
