Moreish Moorish in lovely Algarve
Valerie Shanley

WHILE many destinations abroad can be just a little too hot for comfort, fans of the Algarve say it has one of the nicest climates of the lot, benefiting from the pleasant breeze coming in from the Atlantic.

Which is just one of the many aspects of these charming villas that form a line of 12 detached new homes close to the village of Luz. The properties are also near the busy harbour town of Lagos, once the capital of Portugal's Algarve region, with all the attractions that both holidaymakers and homeowners alike relish, from colourful markets to a swish new marina, restaurants and bars.

The properties, just five minutes' drive from the ocean, are in the quiet residential area of Atalaia. Meia Praia beach stretches right around the bay which is dotted with sandy coves and grottos, providing the opportunity for sunbathing and water sports. In the other direction is the Boavista golf course, a facility that makes this part of the Algarve practically a year-round destination along with that climate.

With a hint of Moorish architecture in the design, the Colina D'Atalaia development offers three-bed detached properties, two of which have their own private pool and the remainder with communal pool. "All of the villas are southwest facing, with living and terraces oriented to benefit from maximum sunshine, and each has its own private gardens, " says Hilary Clein from selling agent O'Connor Murphy Gubbins, adding that there is plenty of scope within those gardens for owners to construct their own swimming pool.

"In terms of investment, the Algarve has up to 20 weeks of rental potential, particularly because of the golf amenities, unlike Spain, which realistically only has around eight weeks."

Prices start from 498,000 and rise to 795,000 for the largest, three-storey properties; floor spaces range from 172sq m (1,851sq ft) to 334sq m (3,595 sq ft). All homes have fitted kitchens with leading brand appliances. There are both open and shaded terraces with individual barbecue areas and the entire development is gated.
