WORLDWIDE job cuts at Intel, one of Ireland's largest employers, could be as high as 20,000, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal. The semiconductor manufacturer has declined to comment on reports that between 10,000 and 20,000 jobs will be shed as part of a cost-cutting package to be announced on Tuesday. Last July, Intel reported its lowest sales and profit figures since 2004. Over 1,000 management positions were shed over the summer months. The latest job-cutting exercise is expected to concentrate on marketing staff. Intel has a 5,500 workforce at its Irish operations. Intel employees at the Co Kildare-based plant were largely unaffected by job cuts in 2001 and 2002.
