NOEL Ahern, where have you been? The Fianna Fail/PD coalition has been in power for almost a decade. Throughout that time, house prices have been increasing annually, often at double-digit rates of growth. Since the mid1990s, the national conversation has moved from emigration and unemployment to house prices and mortgage levels.
So how, then, does a junior minister and an experienced politician like Bertie's brother get away with a statement like:
"There is something wrong if the prices [of houses] keep going up. Some form of taxation would help."
It's a case of being in power but doing so little with it.
