CRADDOCKSTOWN LADIES SPEED TO HAT-TRICK TRIUMPH
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSES With Pat Ruddy

AN unprecedented hat-trick has been achieved by the ladies of Craddockstown Golf Club in the Eastern division of the AA All-Ireland Championship.

Craddockstown had three teams in the finals - Senior Foursomes, Junior Cup and the Intermediate Cup and impressively won all three.

This is an incredible accomplishment for any club but virtually unbelievable for a club only founded in the 1990s and with 160 lady members, of whom only about 80 are really active players!

Their fine 18-hole course, located on the Blessington Road coming from Naas, was recently redeveloped. The introduction of bigger water hazards has done much to condition players for events away from home as they don't take fright at the sight of hazards anymore!

Of course, so much could not be achieved without lots of thrills and spills along the way. One of the big tests came on 12 July when Lorna Shaffrey was at the Glen of the Downs managing the Intermediate Cup team. She received a last minute call that Stella Lunny had injured herself that morning and could not play in the Junior Cup team that same day at Castlewarden.

Shaffrey hopped into her car and was lucky that the M11, M50 and M7 motorways had been completed between the Glen and Castlewarden.

She was equally lucky not to gather some non-Stableford points along the way, borrowed gear from a friend as there was no time to go home for her own. . . and won the vital point!

Lady captain Anne O'Malley, recognising greatness when she saw it, made a special presentation to Shaffrey at her captain's prize dinner. Only right, too!

These were truly heroic months for these ladies and it is important to record for posterity the way in which Craddockstown won these three titles and the players involved. Details are below.

Senior Foursomes (handicaps 0-16) beat Naas, Rathfarnham, Laytown, Edmondstown and Castle.

Team players - Stella Lunny (8) & Moira O'Connell (11), Mary Kearney (10) & Erika Roche (12), Margaret Swan (11) & Anne Bolster (15). Subs - Lorna Shaffrey (16), Susan Flynn (16) and two who played but went out of handicap range, Miriam Morris (17) and Susan Flynn (16). Manager, Brigid Kennedy Junior Cup (handicaps 8-15) beat Naas, Charlesland, Howth, rathfarnham and Malahide. Team players - Stella Lunny, Moira O'Connell, Mary Kearney, Erika Roche, Margaret Swan.
