LOCAL player Mark Talbot (10 handicap) put his knowledge of the Ashbourne golf course to good use with victory in the Leinster Final of the Sunday Tribune Golfsure Personal All Ireland Club Singles competition on Monday last.
On a blustery showery day, he had a two point winning margin over Denis Taylor (5) from Laytown and Bettystown Golf Club and Shane Horrigan (4) from Old Conna Golf Club both on 37 points.
This victory earned him and his captain Paul Donnelly a trip to the Algarve in Portugal and the chance of an All-Ireland title when the finals are played there at the end of September.
In the Ladies section of the final, there was a clear cut winner in Seapoint Golf Club member Sally Casey (8 handicap) with 39 points from 29 handicap Sue Summers (Elmgreen Golf Club) on 36 points and 15 handicap Elish Kelleher ( Dun Laoghaire Golf Club) in third place with 35 points. One happy Lady Captain, Marie Wiseman from Seapoint Golf Club will also accompany Sally to the National final in Portugal.
Four lucky Club Managers will also accompany the group to the All-Ireland Finals in Portugal as Golfsure Personal presented tickets to Ronan Smyth (Ashbourne GC), Mike O'Sullivan (Gowran Park GC), Nick Agate (Malone GC) and Sean O'Neill (Mount Juliet GC) after their victory in the Club Managers' annual golf day at County Louth Golf Club recently.
The All-Ireland final will be held over 72 holes (Pinta, Penina Championship, Morgado and Boavista) in the Algarve, Portugal (30 September . . . 7 October) with the Hotel Tivoli Arade in Portimao hosting the party.
The event, in its third year, is a singles competition open to all club members affiliated to the Golfing Union of Ireland and the Irish Ladies Golf Union holding a Golfsure Personal policy. Golfsure Personal is apart of the Golfsure product range and is a major sponsor of amateur golf in Ireland, sponsoring the Irish Close Amateur Championship and Senior Interprovincial.
No fee is requested from the participating players as Golfsure Personal donated 1 from every premium during 2006 to the Beaumont Hospital Foundation for the purchase of cancer treatment equipment. The tournament has raised over 250,000 for the Foundation in the three years of its existence.
Late entries are still being accepted for the two remaining Provincial finals at Co Armagh Golf Club on Monday 11 September (Ulster Final) and Westport Golf Club Thursday 14 September (Connacht Final). Contact Pat Cashman, Tournament Coordinator on litia@eircom. net.
In the Munster finals at Mallow Golf Club, there was a thrilling finish as the Mallow Lady President, Ann Holland (13) with 38 points, edged out Claire Endersen (20, Bantry Bay) on the back nine to win.
In third place was Maureen Creedon (10, Waterville) with 37 points.
In the Men's section there was success for Bantry Bay as their player John O'Sullivan (12) swept to victory with 39 points over Clonmel's Billy Bergin (18) on 37 points.
