BUNDORAN DRIVE ON TO JB CARR SEMI-FINAL
Beautiful Bundoran, as it is described in verse and song, is thrilling as never before as its conquering golf heroes have just captured their first ever Ulster title by winning through to the semi finals of the JB Carr Trophy.
Sweet-swinging Frank McGloin, once the club professional but long since back as an amateur, played his part to form a strong duet with Reggie Gallogley in a never to be forgotten Ulster final in which they beat the mighty Malone.
The McGloin name popped up in the final of the Club Scratch Matchplay, too, as Frankie's twohandicap nephew Gary seemed set for victory when three-up after four. But Michael Burke, one of those fearless teenagers who throng the fairways of modern Ireland, covered the remaning holes in three-under-par to snatch victory.
Visiting golfers continue to make Bundoran a mandatory annual visit.
So, according to the club notice-board, green fees are expected to amount to just short of 200,000 this year with the Great Northern Hotel negotiating for a new rent of 40,000 and 45% of "normal green fees".
MOTHER JENNINGS LEADS BY EXAMPLE
Gemma Jennings has been in remarkable form at Navan Golf Club where she has entered the winner's enclosure twice in a week.
First, she led her 15-year-old twin daughters Alwyn and Bebhinne to a winning tally of 82points in a team event, then reemerged three days later to win the Captain's Prize to ladies with 42 points.
MOUNT WOLSELEY HITS DOUBLE FIGURES
Mount Wolseley Golf Club, which boasts a terri"c and impeccably manicured course designed by the inimitable Christy O'Connor Jnr, has in the blinking of an eye celebrated its 10th Anniversary.
Celebrating for that reason and because golf can be such an easy game is Bernie Campbell whose handicap has tumbled from 25 to 19 as, amongst other achievements, she scored 41 points to win Lady President Mary Morrissey's Prize by seven points from Eilis Hanley.
PRO PRIZE BECOMES SIBLINGS' SPAT
Oh Sister! How cruel can you be?
So it was at Headfort Golf Club where Annette O'Reilly (19) scored a brilliant 71 in the Professional's Prize only to be pipped by one stroke by her sister Marie, who played a gross 75 for nett 70.
Headfort's professional is serial winner Brendan McGovern, who showed all and sundry that he is still a scoring genius when winning the recent Milltown ProAm with a scorching 64.
A HOLE IN ONE IS OLD HAT FOR JAMES MEADE
"Ace" is what they are going to have to call their Honorary Secretary James Meade at Woodstock Golf Club.
When Meade got a hole-in-one at the 172-metre fourth hole last week the casual observer might have wondered why he wasn't dancing for joy.
The explanation is that this sort of thing is old hat for Meade who has had 12 previous holes-in-one.
His first ace was at the old third at Lahinch in 1963. Since then, he has scored seven there as well as four at Ennis, where he is an Honorary Life Member in recognition of his services to junior golf.
His latest ace shows how he keeps up with technology as it was made through his first competitive stroke with a newfangled rescue club, borrowed from Martin Ward in PM Golf.
