Southgate fuming as Henry saves Arsenal
Jim van Wijk Emirates Stadium

FA PREMIERSHIP
ARSENAL 1
MIDDLESBROUGH 1
ARSENAL were forced to settle for a draw against 10-man Middlesbrough at the Emirates Stadium, where referee Rob Styles sent off the wrong player. James Morrison had put the visitors ahead in the first half with a neat finish. However, Boro saw captain George Boateng wrongfully dismissed on the hour for a second yellow card when he had not already been cautioned . . . much to the disgust of manager Gareth Southgate.

Thierry Henry levelled from the penalty spot, but Arsenal could not find a winner.

Southgate opted to pack the midfield, and in doing so seemed to restrict his team's attacking options.

But on 21 minutes they took a shock lead. Morrison made progress down the right, and played a neat one-two with JasonEuell on the edge of the Arsenal area. The youngster continued his run, and dispatched a cool finish under Jens Lehmann.

As the hour mark passed, Styles cautioned Euell for dissent and was soon reaching for his pocket again.

Boateng went flying into Ljungberg just in front of the dug-out, and ended up in a heap on the floor himself. The referee immediately ran over and produced a yellow card for the Boro captain, followed by a red. However, it seemed as if Styles confused the two Boro players, believing he had just issued a caution to the Dutchman rather than Euell. Southgate was incensed, his captain eventually carried off on a stretcher.

And things got worse for the Boro manager with 23 minutes left.

Eboue darted into the right side of the area, and was caught by Stewart Downing. Styles pointed to the spot, with Henry making no mistake. The home side had to work hard for the draw but Middlesbrough will still feel disappointed with the point.
