Prevention better than cure for GP site
Isabel Hayes

A CORK-BASED GP has bought the rights to the website www. ratemygp. com in a bid to ensure that any online service rating the merits of doctors has "more balance" than similar sites like ratemyteacher and rateyoursolicitor.

Dr Diarmuid Mulcahy, from Midleton, purchased the domain name last December and, while he currently does not have plans to set up a ratemygpwebsite, he hopes to have an influence on its future creation.

"I don't feel it is necessary to have such a service, " he told the Sunday Tribune. "But in the era of technology and the development of these kinds of sites, it's going to happen anyway. I thought it was best to be proactive in its formation."

Ratemyteacher came to Ireland a couple of years ago, causing a storm in schools as students went online to criticise their teachers.

Rateyoursolicitor has attracted much attention from angry customers since beginning six months ago.

"I would envisage a more balanced site, where users have to identify themselves, " said Mulcahy about a GP-rating site. There could also be some non-promotional, general health messages giving good medical advice online."
