Irishman's remix of gameshow theme tune is a tribute to its late presenter Richard Whiteley
AN IRISH disc jockey is set to send dance music fans across Europe into a frenzy with the release of his remix of the theme music to the hit Channel Four gameshow Countdown.
Dara O'Neill, who performs under the name Dancepig, is currently in negotiations with Yorkshire Television and EMI Music over the release of a track that was one of the highlights of last weekend's Electric Picinic music festival.
"I have always liked the Countdown theme tune and I thought that it would make a great dance track so I mixed it a few months back and I have been playing it ever since, " said Dancepig.
While the track has already built up a cult following in Ireland, the 24year-old from Tramore, Co Waterford hopes to release it in the UK and has been in talks with EMI Music and Yorkshire Television who co-own the publishing rights for the theme tune.
"I spoke to Yorkshire Television about getting the rights to release the track earlier this year but they felt it was too close to [former presenter] Richard Whiteley's death for the song to be released, " Dancepig said. "They felt it would not be a fitting tribute to Richard. Ideally I would like to have them on board and I am going to get back onto them about it soon."
Dancepig has played DJ sets in all of the major dance venues in Ireland and he is currently trying to branch out into Europe by playing in Berlin and Amsterdam.
While he has not played in the UK yet, he is confident that the Countdown theme tune "should take off over there" when he starts to play the country later this year.
Nobody from EMI Music or Yorkshire Television was available for comment when contacted by the Sunday Tribune.
Presented by Des Lynam and Carol Vorderman, Countdown has become one of the world's most popular gameshows since it was first aired in 1982 and Dancepig claims his remix is a tribute to the show's longest-running presenter, Richard Whiteley, who died last year.
He told the Sunday Tribune that he had some reservations about the release of his Countdown remix.
"The one thing that I am worried about is that it would turn into a novelty record like the 'Crazy Frog' record, " he said. "I would hate it to become a signature for Dancepig and for people to identify me solely by that track. I just want to release it and let other DJs play it."
