'The people who love music will judge for themselves'

No Recruits For Spanish Army
UNFOUNDED rumours have been current for some days to the effect that recruits are being enlisted in Ireland for the Spanish army in its campaign against the Riffs in Morocco. That an Irish Brigade was even in course of formation for the purpose was one of the statements in circulation. As a result, a considerable number of ex-officers and men of the National Army have been making enquiries, with a view to offering their services. There is, however, no foundation whatever for the rumours, as an Irish Independent representative learned last evening. Mr AA Kelly, Spanish Consul in Dublin, emphatically denied that there was any recruiting in Ireland for the Spanish army. He was aware, he said, of the stories in circulation and he had had many applications from Dublin and the provinces from men wishing to join, while others sought information as to conditions of service. "My instructions from the Spanish government, " said Mr Kelly, "are that I cannot recruit for the Spanish army, and that no one can be taken on by me for any such occupation." He had informed all who had made enquiries that the only way in which they could join the Spanish army for the Moroccan campaign was to go to Spain, and take the risk of being accepted for service.

THE tenders which were lying on the river [Liffey] for the reception of impressed seamen, sailed on Saturday for England, each of them carrying three hundred sailors for the fleet. Since the sailing of the above vessels, there has been no press in the harbour. On Tuesday, Mr R Sherlock, of the Customhouse, was drowned, it is imagined in consequence of being seized with a cramp while swimming; his horse and clothes were found on the South Wall, on the southern side of which he had gone in. This gentleman was supposed to be 80 years old, and had been 40 a confidential servant to the Commissioners of the Revenue. It was his custom to bathe every day for 20 years past in all weather, and being a good swimmer, it is imagined he was seized with cramps, and having no assistance, perished in consequence.

His fortune, which is supposed to be about 4,000l, will be gavelled among his relations, as it is said he has left no will behind him. His integrity may be judged of by merely mentioning that he was constantly employed to carry the revenue to the National Bank, and bring back the proper securities.

The Buckley Serenaders
THIS distinguished group of 'darkies' made their first appearance in Dublin last evening at the Round Room of the Rotunda, which was what may be called 'well filled'. The music, both vocal and instrumental, fully came up to expectation, which, by the by, was no easy task to accomplish, as a great deal was expected from the 'sable fraternity', because of the high praise which was heaped upon them by the English press. It is bad policy to puff true talent, as far as an Irish audience is concerned as no 'preliminary', however well written, will prevent the people who love music judging for themselves. The primitive melodies were given with much pathos and expression, and the instrumental music was soft, expressive and harmonious. The fun and eccentricities of negro life were well represented in the dances, jokes, and conundrums of the 'sable brotherhood' who, Mark Topley like, appeared to be jolly under all circumstances.
