The Sound of No Hands Clapping
By Toby Young Abacus (around 10)
We were originally going to go Old Skool this week and, in honour of its 70th anniversary, point you towards that Dale Carnegie classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People.
Then we realised that Toby Young's first book, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, was far more our style.
Not content with getting run out of New York after a spectacular "ameout working at Vanity Fair and then working his way down the Manhattan food chain, the "clown prince of loser lit" is back with more tales of frustrated ambition, this time in Hollywood, where he went to try his hand at screenwriting. As a two-part chronicle of ambition run amok it has no peer.
