Holding Court at Butlerstown, Co Cork
Valerie Shanley

DATING back to 1760, Sea Court, a property just on the market in Butlerstown, Co Cork, is emblematic of the fine Georgian country houses that are so much a part of the country's rich architectural heritage. Listed among the many fine rooms is a ballroom wing . . . giving an indication of the unique quality of this property.

On parkland extending to 10 acres, and immediately surrounded by mature, terraced gardens, this imposing residence has panoramic views over the Seven Heads peninsula to the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Like so many large period properties, Sea Court didn't remain static in the style of its original era, but altered subtly in keeping with the changing interiors fashions of intervening decades. The house was built by the Longfield family, who also built the equally impressive Longueville House in Mallow.

The house currently functions as an upmarket country guest business, but, says selling agent Michael H Daniels, it could ideally suit as a very special holiday retreat.

A gravel forecourt and limestone steps up to the Georgian entrance portico of the house sets the impressive tone of what is to follow. The large reception hall has a cut stoneeffect floor and moulded ceiling cornice. Through the wide arch at the end of the staircase hall is a set of hardwood double doors to the kitchen and another door with fanlight to the inner hall. The two main reception rooms at entrance level are generously proportioned. Off the inner hall is the study and through double doors from here is the kitchen. The fully fitted utility room, guest cloakroom, and wine cellar complete the rooms at entrance level.

Within the accommodation is a self-contained staff apartment. On the first floor are five very large bedrooms, three en-suite, and the family bathroom. The guest wing comprises a further five bedrooms and bathroom.

Outside are a number of stone buildings with potential for conversion. The gardens and grounds are an outstanding feature, from the mature woodland to the orchard and taking in an ornamental pond and grass tennis court.
