Roman Emperor to rule over the Curragh
RACING: IRISH PREVIEW Claire Barry

SOME tall reputations go on the line in the Laing O'Rourke National Stakes at the Curragh this afternoon. The Group One contest has produced some top-class performances over the years, and three of the last four winners, George Washington included, have gone on to land the English 2,000 Guineas. George Washington was responsible for giving his handler, Aidan O'Brien, his sixth victory in the race and the master of Ballydoyle again leads the way with likely favourite Holy Roman Emperor.

A decisive winner of the Waterford Wedgewood Phoenix Stakes at this venue last month, having earlier captured the Railway Stakes, the colt is tackling seven furlongs for the first time but has always looked as if he would be more effective over this longer trip. Holy Roman Emperor will be opposed in the line-up by Jim Bolger's very highly regarded Teofilo. Described by his trainer as the best horse he has trained, the son of Galileo is unbeaten in his only three starts to date. Those successes have all been gained over seven furlongs, so stamina won't be a problem, but Bolger is taking no chances here, and Teofilo has the added benefit of a pacemaker in the form of Slaney Time.

It promises to be a fascinating contest, but Holy Roman Emperor is taken to shade it at Teofilo's expense.

Listowel's ever-popular Harvest Festival gets underway tomorrow and lasts right through until next Sunday.

The feature event on Wednesday is the Guinness Kerry National and last year's winner, Euro Leader, has been pencilled in to take his chance under Ruby Walsh. Euro Leader is bidding to become the first horse to complete the Kerry National double since Packed Home obliged back in 1964 and 1965.

Golf enthusiasts will be well catered for at Listowel with a big screen showing all the action from the Ryder Cup on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Then there is the Ryder Cup race day at the Curragh on Tuesday, which features the richest race ever to be run in Ireland. A total of 38 horses are still eligible for the Shelbourne Hotel Goffs Million, which is worth 1m to the owner of the successful horse.

That entry includes 17 horses trained in Britain, and the pick of these would appear to be Drumfire, Silk Blossom, So Sweet and Codeword.

The home defence is led by Kevin Prendergast's Miss Beatrix, but she also features, as does the Dermot Weldtrained Fly Free, among the 32 entries for the Shelbourne Hotel Goffs Fillies 500.
