ALL week we've been hearing of the significance of Roscommon reaching this final but the stakes are high for Kerry as well. It's 12 years since they last won a minor title and former Clare manager, John Kennedy, will be keen to have his native county's name scrawled on the Tommy Markham trophy this afternoon.
Kerry certainly have the firepower to do it today but this Roscommon team, heavy underdogs once again, are well used to turning predictions around. Having won their first Connacht title in 16 years, they've made the final thanks to a strong team ethic and will hope that this can carry them all the way to their first title at this grade in 55 years.
But they'll find it hard against an experienced Kerry side. They may not have been fancied to win Munster but when Tipperary knocked out Cork, the path was laid for Kerry and the team have gelled well since, despite limping home against Mayo in the quarter-final.
Kerry, though, have come undone at the latter stages of this competition in recent years, losing to Tyrone in the final of 2004 and Mayo in the semi last year. Their captain, Paddy Curran, who scored 16 against Donegal last month, was around for both those campaigns and he'll be a face that Kerry will look towards regularly today.
Roscommon's win over Meath in the other semi-final was one of the big surprises in all competitions this year and in Donal Shine they have a game winner to ask serious questions of Kerry. It's a huge day for Roscommon but they'll need to come out firing from the start if they're going to trouble Kerry. Even at that, they'll still find it tough.
