PARTICIPANTS in today's Sunday Tribune/IMS Millward Brown were asked whether or not they believe that the majority of Muslims living in Ireland were moderate in their political views.
Just over one quarter . . . 27% . . . said that they did not believe that Muslims in Ireland were politically moderate. Under half of those surveyed (42%) believe that Irish Muslims were moderate. Tellingly, nearly a third of those surveyed offered no opinion, which may underline the non-Muslim community's lack of information about Muslims living in Ireland.
The resident theologian at the Islamic Cultural Centre, Ali Selim, said that he viewed the finding of 42% believing that Muslims living in Ireland held moderate political views as "a positive thing". He said that a portion of this opinion change can be attributed to the organisation of the Muslim community itself. "We are organising functions and raising awareness, so people's views are changing. We are campaigning to raise awareness about Islam and Muslims living in ireland and we are still working on that."
