Ruin yourself in Offaly
Valerie Shanley

CREATE your own restoration drama with one of the rarest of historic properties to arrive on the market - and one with an intruiging connection with the 16th century royal Tudors.

Clonony Castle, near Shannon Harbour, Co Offaly is now essentially a ruin, comprising a three storey rectangular tower house protected by an inner and outer bawn. The tower house, dating back to the early 1500s, is built on a limestone bedrock foundation and measures 50 feet in height. In the grounds, under an ancient hawthorn tree, is evidence of the connection between the castle and the Tudors.

The Bullen stone that still lies here was quarried for the nieces of the illfated wife of Henry V111, and who were also cousins to Queen Elizabeth 1. There are many ancestral connections with the Bullen family in the area, according to selling agent Helen Cassidy. The name of Henry's wife may not be immediately familiar - Nan Bullen was better known as Anne Boleyn.
