IRISH Distillers is to embark on a multimillion-euro plan to revamp the historic Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin's Smithfield. The company has submitted planning permission to Dublin city council for refurbishment of the listed building, which dates from the 19th century, including expanded exhibition space for the visitor centre and a new bar. There will also be a new lobby, a glass floor at ground level and rearrangement of the first floor restaurant and bar.
A spokesman for Irish Distillers said the visitor centre at the Old Distillery was ten years old and that the company had decided it was time to refurbish it. "The facility is a key part of the marketing platform for Jameson, " he said.
Jameson has been a star performer for the company, owned by international drinks giant Pernod Ricard. Jameson sales have doubled in the last decade to over two million cases a year. Sales grew 12% over the first half of this year, buoyed by strong demand in the US. The company wants the revamped distillery to re"ect that success, the spokesman said.
Work is scheduled to begin in January 2007, subject to planning permission, and Irish Distillers hopes to complete it within three months so it can reopen in time for St. Patrick's Day. The distillery is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country and hosted over 200,000 visitors last year.
