RACING: ENGLISH REPORT
LADBROKES English St Leger hope Jadalee put up a solid, rather than spectacular, display to win the Windflower March Stakes at Goodwood.
Marcus Tregoning's threeyear-old has been pencilled in as a possible contender for the final English Classic of the season and showed admirable battling qualities to justify his short price in the Listed heat. The Desert Prince colt was always close to the pace set by Barolo before gaining a narrow advantage approaching the three furlong marker.
Despite finding a nice split on the far rail, Dale Gibson became embroiled in an absorbing duel with Akarem along the straight.
But once the latter began to tire, Jadalee still needed to pull out all the stops to repel the rejuvenated Barolo and score by a neck at odds of 1011. VC Bet and William Hill remain unchanged at 12-1 about Tregoning's charge winning the Leger at York on September 9, with the sponsors also unmoved, although they are shorter at 8s.
Meanwhile, Wasseema took her winning run to three with another all-the-way success in the Bluesquare. com Atlanta Stakes on Variety Club Charity Day at Sandown. The onetime Classic hopeful hit top form at Goodwood in June and hasn't looked back since, following up an impressive Ascot victory with a length and a quarter call over Bahia Breeze in the mile contest.
Despite sweating up and drifting out to 9-4 beforehand, Michael Stoute's filly determinedly made all and was always holding the runnerup, with the late gamble on 64 favourite La Mottie failing to come off, the market leader having to settle for third.
Stoute's representative James Savage said: "She would appreciate better ground and Richard (Hills) said she is progressive but temperamental."
