Spencer hand-picks a winner
Martin Kelly

JAMIE SPENCER benefited from the late withdrawal of his intended mount Cesare as Formal Decree romped to victory in the totesport Cambridgeshire. Normally one of the most competitive handicaps of the season, Alan Swinbank's charge powered up the Newmarket hill for a convincing fourlength win.

The 33 runners converged up the middle of the track with the exception of Spectait, who ploughed a lone furrow up the far rail, with the main pack taken along by the 9-2 favourite Smart Enough. However, two furlongs out, Spencer's mount found another gear to gallop clear and leave Dean McKeown, his usual pilot, with mixed feelings. Spencer came in for the mount as his mother-in-law Lynda Ramsden owns part of the winner.

Andy Turnell's Blue Bajan (25-1) ran on for second, while Walter Swinburn's Pinpoint (10-1) got the better of Take A Bow (40-1) in a photo for second. Smart Enough kept on bravely for fifth. Spencer said: "I rode him at the July meeting and I really loved him. A mile and one is not his trip, he wants a mile and a half.

"At halfway I thought I was in a bit of trouble but the lovely thing about him is when you give him a squeeze he responds every time for you. All credit must go to Dean McKeown for letting me get on him as he didn't have to get off. He reacted like a true gentleman over the whole thing. I have no doubt in my mind that this horse will win a Group race over a mile and a half."

Spinning Queen (12-1) obliterated her rivals in the Kingdom Of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes for an allthe-way nine length success.

Barry Hills' filly made every post a winning one and topclass mares such as Soviet Song, Alexander Goldrun and Red Evie could never get on terms. Sent to the front from the outset by the trainer's son Michael, the result was never in any doubt when fully three furlongs from home she opened up a three-length lead.

The advantage was extended all the way to the line as James Fanshawe's Soviet Song (9-2) just held off Alexander Goldrun for second.

Barry Hills said: "The original plan was to go to the Challenge Stakes as she didn't get a mile earlier in the year and she didn't like soft ground, but if your not in it you can't win it and you have to take these horses on to win. She had a good draw against the rail and we got the script right as they were all hold-up horses. She's tough and always runs good, solid races. We'll still look at the Challenge Stakes and the Breeders' Cup."

Michael Hills said: "She's been on the go all year, but dad told me she was in top order this morning. She moved like a dream to the start and we had a plan to make the running and it worked. If it had been a sprint it wouldn't have brought her stamina in to play so we elected to go one.

We always felt she was a Group One filly and she ran well behind Speciosa at the start of the season."

Soviet Song's rider Oscar Urbina said: "The filly tried very hard as I was in trouble from about three out. She has such a big heart and she just keeps battling for you."

Her trainer James Fanshawe was asked about the possibility of a step-up to 10 furlongs in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes. "We'll see how she is before deciding as we still have a couple of weeks, " he said. "I don't think it was a bad run, but the winner won well. My other filly (Musicanna) just ran a bit flat."

Alexander Goldrun's rider Kevin Manning said: "The ground was shifting and she wasn't entirely happy on it.

She just kept changing her legs." The five-year-old is now set to head to Sha Tin in December for the Hong Kong Cup, a race she won in 2004.
