Mountain scales the heights at Fairyhouse
Claire Barry

THE Aidan O'Brien-trained Mountain, who finished sixth in the Budweiser Irish Derby, took full advantage of the drop in class to take the listed Diamond Stakes in the hands of Kieren Fallon at Fairyhouse yesterday.

Backed from 5-4 into 9-10 favourite, the Montjeu colt asserted his superiority in the final 100 yards to score by a length and threequarters.

O'Brien wasn't present at the meeting, but Fallon said of Mountain: "He was due that, because he's run some great races and ran well in the Derby. He needed that as a confidence-booster."

The bandwagon of winners being enjoyed by trainer Kevin Prendergast and his stable jockey Declan McDonogh rolled on, thanks to Evening Time's impressive nine-length victory in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden.

The debutante was an easy to back favourite, and Prendergast remarked "She's not too big, but her engine is in the right place. She couldn't do anymore than she did.

We've just been waiting for an ease in the ground for her, but I don't think there's really anything left for her this season."

Aliceinwonderland headed the betting for the Clonee Maiden, but she was beaten by a neck into second place by the Pat Smullen-ridden 14-1 outsider Kintyre Blues.

The winner is trained by the jockey's wife Frances Crowley, who admitted "That was a bit of a surprise, to be honest, but she's improving all the time."

Stable-companion Smarty Socks was sent off favourite to complete a double for the trainer and jockey in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Auction Maiden, but he could finish no closer than third behind Sensible Lady, from the Con Collins stable.

The 3-1 chance races in the familiar colours of Herb Stanley, who has had several placed horses on the level before, but was getting off the mark for the first time as a flat owner.

Curragh trainer Edward Harty sent out a double, saddling Tovario to collect under Colm O'Donoghue in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Premier Nursery Handicap and Itsonlywoody for a half length win in the hands of Sean Levey in the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap.
